This song is written to a slightly altered version of the folk tune “Poor Wayfaring Stranger”.
Though made just right, our father Adam,
With no excuse, he ate that fruit;
So we his children, we go with him –
He chose for us, we follow suit.
So now we stand in guilt before You,
We never even want to try
Our hearts will turn in evil from You,
And as You say: it’s just we die.
But You in mercy made a plan to
Rescue some people from this mess,
You change our hearts, change our desire;
Now we are sad to still transgress!
To make this so, You sent us Your Son,
He acts for us, He takes our place:
So we stand free from guilt before You
He is our head, we live by grace!
So I will trust my life to Jesus,
I’ll follow him; he stood for me.
My life was dead because of Adam,
In Jesus Christ I am set free!
And I will change, for Christ is Master,
I’ll work for him, serve to the end –
He lived for me: I live for him now
Who could do less for such a friend?
