This song is written to go with the tune
“Marching through Georgia”
by Henry Clay Work, 1832-1884.
Score
When we see phenomena we try and understand,
Make an explanation fit and when it does it’s grand;
As we find out more and more it can get out of hand:
Which theory falls, which theory will stand?
The pieces of a jigsaw can be scattered on the floor
But we know that they will fit together as we saw;
And so every true idea fits every other one,
Joining them up can be so much fun!
The truth! The truth! It’s by the truth we see
The truth! In truth, the truth will all agree,
Everything we know will always be a part of this
In truth we see that the truth all fits!
All the small ideas we have don’t just stand on their own
Even little ones will add a little to the tone
Of the great big picture which makes up this world, our home,
Who drew the picture, which is his own?
We must find the truth although we don’t have all the bits,
Let us try to find out where our small bits will best fit:
Into which big picture do they best align their truth?
One that has beauty or one uncouth?
The truth! The truth! It’s by the truth we see
The truth! In truth, the truth will all agree,
Everything we know will always be a part of this
In truth we see that the truth all fits!
Each big picture that we see has great explaining power
Tries to link the truths we know and find out hour by hour,
But who will you trust to draw that picture of the world?
Link truth with truth, till the world’s unfurled?
The truth! The truth! It’s by the truth we see
The truth! In truth, the truth will all agree,
Everything we know will always be a part of this
In truth we see that the truth all fits!
