I also enjoy the Dragonriders of Pern series, by Anne McCaffrey.  I’m still not sure what website I could link to about this, so I leave it to you to search for reviews and so on.

I find the world of Pern very well thought out and exciting, but I do have two reservations: the immorality - mainly of the weyrfolk - which gets to me; and the tacit acceptance of evolution, which is, to be fair, common to most science fiction writers - since Darwin popularised the theory, I suppose.  But the books are very well written, enjoyable, and the people often do very good, self-sacrificing things.

My Mother has written some Sci-Fi novels, some of which, anyway, are being published on http://www.bookcram-d.co.uk/.  You may well find some other works by members of my family there at some time or other as well.
